The Importance of Oil in the Bible

You’re probably familiar with using bread and wine/juice in a communion service, which represents the body and blood of Jesus. So if bread and wine represent Jesus, then what represents the Holy Spirit? Oil!

“13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David in the presence of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose and went to Ramah. 1 Samuel 16:13 (AMP)”

“39 Zadok the priest took a horn of [olive] oil from the [sacred] tent and anointed Solomon. They blew the trumpet, and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!” (AMP)”

Whatever the bible uses to represent the Holy Spirit is what we want to use. Therefore, we use oil!

The Holy Spirit Comes as Oil

The gift of God is His great love for each of us. He wants only the best for us, so he gives us His Holy Spirit to guide us through life. The Holy Spirit is just as important in our Christian walk as Jesus and the Father. So why does oil represent the Holy Spirit? Here Jack Hayford talks about the Holy Spirit as oil:

The anointing—the oil of Scripture—is directly related to the Holy Spirit’s work in our life (2 Cor. 1:21-22). This anointing makes us sensitive (1 John 2:20). How many times have you sensed something was wrong or right but didn’t know why or how you knew? The Holy Spirit, by His anointing and presence, confirms what He is—the Spirit of Truth, Holiness, and Wisdom. Obeying the Holy Spirit means that He will give us wisdom when we need it in our everyday life.

Anointing Oil

All the primary offices of Scripture—prophets, priests, and kings—involve anointing. And all of these are offices to which we are called. As prophets, we are called to speak the Word of the Lord. There are times when the Holy Spirit will give you words of comfort, exhortation or sensitive counsel to say to other people. As priests, the Lord wants to anoint us for worship to renew us so that our worship doesn’t become stale, habitual or formal. And as kings, we don’t just get anointed once. It takes fresh anointing for dominion of His Kingdom and the authority of His life to happen through us. When it does, we can move confidently in our homes, businesses, and relationships with family and others. God will not anoint us with the ability to rule when we try to manage things our way!

The Oil of Rejoicing

The Lord wants to anoint those who are overcome by the spirit of mourning with the oil of rejoicing. That anointing brings the lifting of our heads with the refreshing of seeing beyond today—not with superficial optimism, but with a deep abiding of hope that comes from God.

Symbols of the Holy Spirit

Anointing with oil symbolizes the Holy Spirit’s uniting us with Jesus, the Messiah, the Anointed One. (Acts of the Apostles 10:381 John 2:20-27)

Here is a great resource about the symbols of the Holy Spirit!

Official documents in the past (Nehemiah 9:38Esther 8:8)–and some documents today–were sealed with hot wax. Then the wax was imprinted with the official seal of the person sending the document. Similarly, we are “sealed” by the Holy Spirit to show that we are forever part of God’s family. (Song of Songs 8:6John 6:27)

Holy Spirit as Part of the Trinity

Jesus points to the Spirit, and the Holy Spirit points to Jesus by calling Him the Anointed One, meaning the Holy Spirit One, and the Holy Spirit always glorifies the Father and the Son. Our God is One, and we are One with Him. Jesus prayed, “…that they may all be one; even as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be in Us; that the world may believe that Thou didst send Me.” (NASB)

The power and anointing of the Holy Spirit are available to all believers. If you would like that power in your own life, we agree with you in prayer today!

In Jesus’ name,

Dan
